Spring Momentum is Building

Retail sales are showing promising signs with Oamaru, Wānaka and Alexandra leading the way with strong growth compared to September 2024. While our other three shops are experiencing a slower pace, the arrival of spring is bringing renewed energy and a noticeable lift in sales.

Chatting with fellow retailers I’m reminded it's VERY tough out there. I’m feeling grateful we are in the charity line of retail. Sales are steady and although costs like rent, insurance, wages and general expenses are a big challenge, we are navigating them together. With customers being more mindful of their spending, it’s all about staying resilient and supporting each other through the ups and downs.

We’ve noticed a dip in the overall quality of donations, but we’re still receiving some fantastic treasures that keep our customers excited and coming back for more. If you are doing a spring clean, please keep our Hospice Shops in mind –we’re always grateful for clean quality donations.

A big welcome to Jake Atkin who joined us in early September as the Shop Supervisor in the recently revamped Vogel Street Bookshop.

Our Manager Jenny, supervisors Blake and Michael, and our amazing volunteer Greg the builder, have done an outstanding job transforming the space - removing a wall, redesigning the layout, and creating a fresh inviting atmosphere (recognise the couches from the OCH family lounge anyone?). Their enthusiasm and hard work have truly paid off. The Bookshop looks amazing and is now much easier to navigate!

Huge thanks to the whole team – your efforts are making a real difference. As my dad would often say, 'onwards and upwards'.
