The clinical entrance to the newly refurbished Ōamaru Hub now has a stunning - and appropriate - kōwhai decal to greet patients and whānau.

The kōwhai has been a feature of Hospice since the national organisation was founded in 1986.

Historically the kōwhai was used for its healing properties, but for us it has a wider meaning. It's about compassion, wellness and community.

Like the palliative cloak, the kōwhai symbolises the all encompassing care we offer across our entire hospice service: our community, our staff, our stakeholders, our patients and their whānau.

He kōwhai manaakitanga, he kōwhai rongoā.

NOTE: ‘Palliative’ comes from the Greek word for cloak (korowai).

A special thank you to Harlam for his input.
